Defending the Playlist: May 2009
This little exercise is a monthly feature as you,
the loyal Heavy Metal Comedy reader, can take
a glimpse into my iPod and see what I got on there, metal and otherwise.
Some have been great, others have been, well, I've been called some bad names.
And with the Contact page, you can share your own playlist if you dare.
Grab your iPod, hit 'Shuffle Songs' and discuss the first ten that come up. And I
have a belly full of pork so let's rock. Here is Defending
the Playlist: June 2009.
1. 'Next Life' by In This
Moment. One of the forgettable songs from their first album. 'Beautful
Tragedy' has at least five good songs. I'd put this in the 'solid' category.
Their new 'Call Me' cover? Not so solid. Makes me want to suck dick for money
(y'know, like a gigolo... an American gigolo... y'know like the movie,,, the one
with Richard Gere... with 'Call Me' by Blondie on the soundtrack... have I layed
it on thick enough?)
2. 'What's Going On' by A Perfect
Circle. Worse Marvin Gaye cover by a lead singer I love: this, or Eddie
Vedder w/ The Strokes doing 'Mercy Mercy Me'? Tool is coming to
Manchester, NH in August. I am on the fence. Five years ago, I would have
never guessed I would be undecided on seeing Tool in concert. What's going
on?
3. 'Pledge Your Allegiance' by Suicidal
Tendencies. My older brother was a skater when he was in high school. I
should have known then he was into ST, except I did not find out until I bought
'Prime Cuts' and he borrowed it. Turns out he knows, like, a shitload, bordering
on a fuckload, of Sucidal Tendencies songs. Point being, older brother always
knows best.
4. 'Pilate' by Pearl Jam. Yeah yeah yeah. Pearl
Jam sucks. Blow me.
5. 'Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin'-Geddon by Marilyn
Manson. This one is growing on me, I hated it for not being vintage
Manson despite its awesome title. Maybe I am getting into it because I am trying
to talk myself into spending $60 to see Manson/Slayer in August. The problem with being in my 30's is that 1) I am
becoming the old guy at the concerts especially at 2:00 when all the old people
are at work or drinking in the parking lot, and 2) all my
old concert buddies are old and don't want to go to concerts anymore, especially on a
Wednesday.
6.
'Orgasmatron' by Motorhead. I must admit. I don't what came first, this
version or Sepultura's. I discovered Sepultura before Motorhead (how the fuck
that happened is beyond me), so I just assumed they did it first. Let me Google
this info and get back to you... Turns out it was Motorhead in '86 and Sepultura
covered it in '91, which explains why I knew Sepultura's first (I was in high school in '91). You're welcome.
7. 'The
Devil in Miss Jones' by Mike Ness. I don't think we ever came to a
conclusion. Is Social Distortion okay to like? We can assume Volbeat is okay,
correct? So if you don't dig
Social Distortion, remember that Volbeat probably would not exist if not for Social Distortion.
In case none of this makes sense, Mike Ness is the lead singer of
Social Distortion. And this song is good, y'know, for a country
song.
8. 'Astro Zombies' by
The Misfits. I better write quick because all their songs are short.
Actually, this one cracks 2:00, so let's talk. Clif Notes: Glen Danzig. Make-up.
Cliff Burton. Garage Dayz. Kill your baby. Jerry Only.
Embarrassing.
9. '5.15' by The Who. I saw The Who (with
Robert Plant opening!) years ago. I got to the show early and brought a 12-pack
for my two friends and I to pound before the show. They ran real
late, When they finally arrived, they were met by 10 empty beer
cans. Lesson learned: show up on time. And 'My Generation' is perfect for a piss break.
10. 'Hail Destroyer' by Cancer Bats. Great
song. I heard about these guys on Sirius XM. Now they are a staple in my workout
routine. This song especially. Children of nothing, this is our song!
I
am pretty okay with this Playlist. Nothing too embarrassing and some songs I
really like, namely Motorhead
and Cancer Bats (which is a great name). Top that bitches.
For the record, 'From Out of Nowhere' by Faith No More was song
#11 so you were saved thirty paragraphs of me gushing about the reunion and the
killer
setlist.
